چکیده

• Estimating the expansion of granular activated carbon (GAC) in water is complex. The incipient porosity GAC much higher compared to rigid particles. Combining fluidisation and characterisation experiments enables modelling. modelling complex but possible. Granular filtration an important unit operation drinking treatment. widely used for its adsorption capabilities as a barrier undesired organic macro- micro-pollutants. consists two successive phases: filtration, capturing impurities from conjunction with backwash procedure which suspended particles are flushed out system. Available literature predominantly focusses on adsorption. A less frequently discussed nevertheless equally crucial aspect this beds. To prevent accumulation avoid additional costs, optimal backwashing required. Another factor sustainability: utilities showing increasing interest exploring new sustainable media. As these have different bed tendencies due characteristics varying geometries, operational developments needed prediction models estimate degree during backwashing. non-spherical, porous polydisperse. Through combination advanced particle laboratory experiments, we demonstrate approach leads improved model filters.

Bacteria associated with granular activated carbon particles in drinking water.

A sampling protocol was developed to examine particles released from granular activated carbon filter beds. A gauze filter/Swinnex procedure was used to collect carbon fines from 201 granular activated carbon-treated drinking water samples over 12 months. Application of a homogenization procedure (developed previously) indicated that 41.4% of the water samples had heterotrophic plate count bact...

Removal of bromide and bromate from drinking water using granular activated carbon.

Granular activated carbon (GAC) was used to remove bromide (Br⁻) and bromate (BrO(3)(-)) from drinking water in both bench- and pilot-scale experiments. The present study aims to minimize BrO(3)(-) formation and eliminate BrO(3)(-) generated during the ozonation of drinking water, particularly in packaged drinking water. Results show that the Br⁻ and BrO(3)(-) levels in GAC-treated water decrea...

An innovative treatment concept for future drinking water production: fluidized ion exchange – ultrafiltration – nanofiltration – granular activated carbon filtration

A new treatment concept for drinking water production from surface water has been investigated on a pilot scale. The treatment concept consists of fluidized ion exchange (FIEX), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), and granular activated carbon filtration (GAC). The FIEX process removed calcium and other divalent cations; the UF membrane removed particles and micro-organisms; and the NF m...
